Mokoia Island

Mokoia Island is a small island, measuring 1.35 square kilometres and is situated in the middle of Lake Rotorua. The island is protected and is a Maori heritage site and only a few small boat tours are allowed at certain times. Mokoia Island boasts some gorgeous features such as geothermal springs and a lava dome! This sounds like a spectacular and very special hidden New Zealand treasure to visit!

Hamurana Springs

Hamurana Springs is a picturesque spot found at the end of an easy 15 walk, which is also located in Rotorua. Hamurana Springs is the deepest natural water spring in the North Island and can be viewed from the bridge or from the high viewing platform. There are also some great picnic spots, so make sure you take all the glorious goodness of this hidden gem and enjoy a picnic lunch while enjoying the stunning views.

Earnslaw Burn

This wee gem is an off the beaten track treasure. You’ll be able to find your way here by heading 40km outside of Queenstown to Glenorchy. Earnslaw Burn is a glacier that has been naturally created by surrounding waterfalls. Another fun fact about Earnslaw Burn is that is was also used in The Hobbit! So all you J. R. R. Tolkien fans, this is the place for you!

Curio Bay

Curio Bay, also known as Tumu Toka, may not be a hidden treasure as such but we think it’s a pretty epic spot that deserves a visit. Located in Southland, Curio bay has some amazing history to it. It was once part of the ancient supercontinent Gondwanaland and is one of three accessible fossil forests in the world. Not only can you enjoy the incredible history of Curio Bay but you may also be able to spot some of the local resident Yellow Eyed Penguins or the pod of rare Hectors dolphins!

There we have it, our top 9 hidden treasures of New Zealand. Enjoy exploring these beautiful locations. Aotearoa really knows how to put it on.
