Thanks to our isolation and varied climate and landscape, New Zealand has become the home to some truly fascinating and beautiful wildlife and it’s a big reason why so many people from around the world visit. We’ve listed a few of our favourites below and talked a bit about them!

Kiwi Bird
We had to start with this one. The Kiwi bird is a much-beloved icon of New Zealand. I mean, we are literally called ‘Kiwis’ by a majority of the world. These cute little fellas are notoriously shy and are also nocturnal, meaning most New Zealanders haven’t even seen one in the wild. If you do want to see one in the wild, you’ll have to visit one of Waipoua Forest, Aroha Island, Warkwarth, Ohope Scenic Reserve, Kapiti Island, Okarito, Tuatapere or Stewart Island and get very, very lucky. Other than that, there are Zoos and sanctuaries around the country that house Kiwis in captivity.

Hector’s Dolphin
Named after Sir James Hector, the Hector’s Dolphin is actually the smallest dolphin species in the world, measuring roughly 140cm when fully grown. They are most commonly spotted in the South Island, particularly in the Akaroa Harbour in Christchurch, though they have been spotted as far south as Bluff.

Lesser Short-tailed Bat
Many people, New Zealanders included, are surprised to learn that we have bats. In fact, the lesser short-tailed bat is the only land-based mammal that is endemic to New Zealand. They’re known for foraging more on the forest floor than any other bat species, but unfortunately, are endangered as a result of forest clearance and introduced predators. They can be spotted at a few sites around the country but, due to their low numbers and nocturnal nature, are very rarely seen in the wild.

Morepork/Ruru
The only remaining native owl in New Zealand, its English name is derived from the distinctive call it makes. While it can also be found in Tasmania, the Morepork is actually native to New Zealand. They are nocturnal, so seeing them during the day isn’t likely, but go to any forested area at night and you will hear a symphony of Morepork calls.
