Most people are not fond of this time of year, especially in New Zealand. Our winters can be bitterly cold and miserable and most of us spend the majority of it counting down the days until it’s Spring. We would all love to pack up and head to the other side of the world for the next three months, but that just isn’t really possible for a lot of us. However, we do have some pretty cool little spots in our own country that you can visit, whether it’s to escape or embrace winter!

Okoroire Hot Springs Hotel, Waikato
If you want to escape the bitter cold for a bit then you can’t go past some geothermal hot pools. These historic pools have undergone extensive redevelopment over the past few years which has seen a huge growth in visitor numbers. The pools were built in 1880 and take advantage of heated water from geothermal springs nearby. The temperature of the pools ranges from 32-37 degrees - hot enough to keep you warm, but not too hot that you have to get out after 5 minutes.

Wanaka, Central Otago
This is only for those willing to fully embrace winter and all it has to offer. Wanaka is a stunningly beautiful town year round but takes on a whole new life in Winter. With Treble Cone, Cardrona, Snow Farm and Snow Park - Wanaka is an absolute playground for lovers of skiing and snowboarding. It manages to provide this, a range of other activities, as well as some exceptional bars and eateries, all while retaining its small-town charm.

Rotorua
Everyone knows Rotorua smells like eggs - thankfully you quickly get used to the smell. The reason it smells that way is due to the amount of geothermal activity that happens all around the city. Thanks to this subterranean activity, Rotorua is a hotspot (pun intended) for hot springs. There are a number of purpose-built and natural hot pools all around the region for you to jump into to escape the bitterly cold temperatures.

Queenstown
You can’t mention winter in New Zealand without talking about Queenstown. It’s a tourist haven year-round with a plethora of activities available, but it really comes alive in winter. It has some of the country’s most scenic ski fields and the views are regularly photographed and shared online - often gaining thousands of views and likes. Besides the world-class ski fields, there are plenty of other activities to partake in; bungee jumping, white water rafting, flying fox, gondola rides and scenic tours are just a few of the things you can do. And after a day full of adventure and activity you can visit one of the many top-tier bars and eateries to unwind.

So there it is. Winter doesn’t have to be awful. As long as you make the most of it or take some time to escape the dreariness - it can be endured!
