Auckland is the largest city in New Zealand in both size and population. This means it is filled to the brim with people and ways to entertain all of those people! We’ve picked out a few different things we believe are worth doing when visiting the ‘City Of Sails’:
Rangitoto Island
Ever wanted to feel like Frodo and Sam and climb an actual volcano? Don’t worry, it’s not active and it only takes around an hour to reach the summit at a steady pace. Once you do reach the top, the views across the harbour to Auckland city are truly a sight to behold. The island features a multitude of different tracks and areas, each offering a different experience. You can even walk over to neighbouring Motutapu island and explore that! Ferries regularly transport passengers between Auckland’s CBD and the two islands.
Muriwai Beach
For the most part, Muriwai Beach is a windswept and beautifully rugged part of the west coast. The beach is long and wide and, on a nice summer’s day, is a great place to come for a spot of sunbathing. But the real star of this place is the Gannet colony. Between August and March, around 1200 gannets nest right next to Muriwai at Maori Bay. The sight of so many birds nesting against the rugged cliffs is quite breathtaking and, thanks to viewing platforms, you’ll have a fantastic view.

At Kelly Tarlton’s you’ll find a range of local and exotic sea life. Kids and adults alike will be fascinated by the different species on show. Shows happen every day and there’s even a chance to get up close and personal with some cute little penguins or, for the braver amongst us, a chance to swim with some sharks!
Sky Tower
The views from the top of the Sky Tower are fantastic. You’ll get an incredible 360-degree look at the city, harbour, and the surrounding suburbs. For the braver ones, you can take a skywalk which involves getting harnessed up and walking around the outside of the building. For the true adrenaline junkies, you can even do a jump off the top of the tower. Once you’ve taken in the views, head down and check out the range of high-quality eateries on offer.

If you’re a fan of learning and knowledge, then Auckland is the perfect place for you. Auckland Museum contains a huge range of historical artefacts and regularly holds awe-inspiring exhibitions. Alternatively, there is the Museum Of Transport And Technology (MOTAT), which explores the history of everything technology and transport related. It’s full of interactive learning so the kids will be occupied and it has plenty of exhibits to keep the adults happy too.
