Winter In New Zealand Is Cool!

No, duh! But what we mean is that, despite the dreary weather, it can still be a great country to travel around and enjoy.

For many of us in New Zealand, when we hear the word ‘Winter’, we think cold, rain, wind, short days, long and cold nights. Just not very nice things. What if we told you that those things don’t exist in every part of the country? You’d call us liars, right? You’d be right. Those things absolutely exist all over the country. It sucks. But wintertime can also bring many advantages and ways to distract yourself from the grey skies. Here are three reasons winter in New Zealand is actually pretty cool.

It’s Relatively Empty
When compared to summer, New Zealand is comparatively abandoned during the winter. Most of us are at home, wrapped in blankets by the fire with a hot chocolate or coffee and all of the tourists are too busy enjoying summer in their own countries to think about coming here. You’ll find lines are much shorter, roads emptier and hotels and motels practically begging you to come and stay at their accommodation. It’s an introvert's dream! While the range of activities you can partake in may be smaller, the drive to get to them will be a delight.

It’s Cheaper
This is directly related to our first point. Due to the fact that nobody is travelling, many businesses see huge drops in visitors. This time of year is considered the off-season and thus many companies will advertise lower prices or offer great deals. Even if they haven’t advertised lower prices, you can usually ask about off-season rates and get a percentage knocked off the price. Bear in mind this only applies to typically tourist-related business like hotels, motels, adventure sports, tours etc. Don’t expect to go to the local McDonalds and ask for a discount because it’s winter!

Snow
One of the most beautiful sites is the snow-capped mountains littered throughout the country. For fans of skiing and snowboarding, the country becomes a playground full of world-class ski fields. Seasonal workers flock to the mountains to get work, either on the fields or in surrounding lodges and restaurants/bars. The mountains are probably the only busy places in the country for the winter months and you’ll have a blast cruising down the slopes during the day then hitting the local establishments at night for some food, drink and fun. Lessons are always available for beginners and multiple competitions take place throughout the country so you’ll get to witness some of the best talents the country has to offer.
