Palmerston North

Many see it as the black sheep of the country, but we think ‘Palmy’ deserves a chance.

Palmerston North takes a lot of ribbing and flak from the rest of the country. Well, we think that’s unfair. The little city actually has a lot to offer in the form of arts, culture, food and adventure. We’ve outlined a few things we think you should check out. So, hire a car and take a trip to this cool little student city for some fun!

Te Manawa Museum of Art, Science and History
Te Manawa is deceptively enjoyable. We say ‘deceptively’ because you wouldn’t expect such an extensive and wide range of exhibitions, artefacts, activities and taonga (Maori treasures) from a museum in a city as small as Palmy. That’s not a dig at the city either, rather a compliment. They have put together something that wouldn’t be out of place in a major city around the world. The range of things to do here means you can bring yourself, your partner or the entire family and everyone will be satisfied after their visit. Te Manawa hosts a number of community events and is a big player in the cultural side of Palmerston North.

New Zealand Rugby Museum
The Rugby Museum in Palmerston North was the first in the world dedicated to the game and contains the countries largest collection of memorabilia, records and some of the rarest rugby artefacts in the world. Admission is only $12.50 and allows you to see some truly remarkable pieces whilst learning about the entire history of the game. If you want to test yourself physically you can take part in the ‘Have a Go’ area where you can see how well you’d fare in a game. The area has kick, tackle, leap, sprint or push activities and will show you just how fit you are (or aren’t) to play the national game of New Zealand.

Lido Aquatic Centre
The Lido Aquatic Centre is one of the top Aquatic facilities in New Zealand and has been operating for over 50 years, having opened in 1966. Summertime is the best time to visit to take advantage of the outdoor pools. With hydro slides, water cannons, a lazy river, SuperBowl slide, speed slide, sauna, steam room and spa, toddler pool, and an onsite cafe and fitness centre there is something for literally everybody here. Bring family and friends and enjoy a day of fun for everyone.

Food and Drink
For a city of fewer than 100,00 people, Palmerston North offers a wealth of great spots to grab a bite to eat or a drink.
The range of establishments is great, offering a lot of choice depending on your mood and budget. From family pubs to upscale bars, fast food to cafes to fine dining - Palmy has it all. Some popular spots are Brew Union Bar, Cyclista Cafe, Nero Restaurant and Dejeuner Restaurant.
