Once you’ve confirmed your moving date, lock in some friends and family to help on the day and book in for your furniture truck rental. Depending on the amount of furniture and homewares you have, select the right sized truck to hire, to suit your needs.

Hiring a furniture truck and doing the moving work yourself can be a little more time-consuming, but you’ll save a lot more money, getting a team of family and friends together to help you move. It’ll be done in no time and then you can get to the fun part, which is setting up your lovely new home!

Here are some tips and tricks to help you with your sorting and packing in the lead up to your big move!

Here are our top 10 moving tips!

  1. Start collecting boxes 4-6 weeks before you move. Spend a couple of afternoons heading to some retail stores asking for spare boxes. They usually have a ton lying around that just get put in the recycling bin. Other places to check are supermarkets and fruit & vegetable shops. If that doesn’t work out, we’ll have you covered. We sell boxes, bubbles wrap and other handy packing supplies to keep your items safe while moving & travelling.

  2. Colour code the boxes and assign a colour to a particular room in the house. This makes it so much easier to know which room to place boxes and keep track of everything.

  3. Label the boxes on the side, rather than the top. This way it’s easy to identify what’s in each box when they’re stacked.

  4. Don’t forget to make use of every basket, suitcase or laundry bins to pack in too. Books are a good one to pack in suitcases as you can easily roll the suitcase, rather than carrying them in a heavy box.

  5. Purge as you pack. We don’t realise how much extra “stuff” we have until we move house. This is the ideal time to get rid of anything that hasn’t been used in the last 6-12 months.

  6. Utilise your socks, towels and t-shirts by using these to wrap up breakable items. For example, use tea towels to wrap and stack plates, socks are handy to protect glasses in and use cushions to pad around delicate items.

  7. To prevent confusion over which cable belongs to which electronic, tape it to the back of it. This will help keep the cable with the item and stop the cables from getting all tied up.

  8. Don’t bother taking your clothes of their hangers. A great way to transport them is slipping a rubbish bag on from the bottom up and tie it at the top around the neck of the coat hangers. Easy to transport and saves a ton of time.

  9. Keep your most valuable items together in a bag or small box that you can easily keep an eye on. Things you might want to pack in here are jewellery, passports, birth certificates and other small but valuable items.

  10. Create an essentials box for the moving day. Everything you may need to use on the day that you don’t want to have to sift through boxes upon boxes to find. For example, toilet paper, cloths, cleaning products, water, first aid kit, painkillers, hand soap or hand sanitiser, snacks, toiletries you may need and some hand tools like screwdrivers etc.

There are so many things to think about when moving house, but we hope these tips can help make that move a little easier.
