Hamilton gets a pretty hard time. It is often used as a punchline in some unflattering jokes and it’s not very often you’ll hear people heaping praise on the city.

We think that’s unfair and not at all representative of New Zealand’s fourth most populous city, so here are a few reasons we think everyone should give Hamilton a fair chance.

Waikato Museum
Hamilton and the surrounding area has a rich history, particularly for the Maori people. Waikato Museum does a fantastic job of outlining Hamilton and Waikato’s long and varied history - from when it was first settled by humans, to the arrival of the british, up to more recent historical events. It contains 13 galleries which host more than 25 exhibitions and 100 events annually. These exhibitions feature a range of works from local artists as well as many renowned international pieces. For the kids, there’s a ton of hands-on science galleries, where they can learn while having fun at the same time.

Hot Air Balloon
If you want to see New Zealand’s stunning landscape like never before, then you have to check out Kiwi Balloon Company’s hot air balloon rides. You will be taken up and over the city, farmland and the mighty Waikato river. On a clear day you will be able to see the mountains of Ruapehu, Pirongia, Te Aroha, and Taranaki. It is a truly breathtaking experience that is a must-do for anyone visiting the region.

Waikato River Experience
Cruising down the Waikato on the Waikato River Explorer offers you a chance to experience the river from a unique perspective and enjoy this wonderful natural attraction at a relaxing pace. There are a number of different cruise options with different schedules depending on the season. You can take a scenic cruise, a wine tasting trip or lunch at a number of fantastic country cafes along the way. The Explorer has a fully licensed bar on board, so you can take in the beautiful sights and sounds with a glass of wine in hand.

The Base
If you love shopping, then The Base may just be heaven for you. It is New Zealand’s largest shopping complex with over 190 stores featuring a range of fashion labels and brands. It is also the home of Hoyts flagship cinema and features the largest silver screen in the entire country. There are over 3,000 free car parks available, eliminating any possibility of not being able to find one. You could probably spend an entire day here and still not do and see everything you wanted to.

Surrounding Areas
At this point you may feel like getting out of the city for a bit, and Hamilton’s location means you have easy access to many amazing locations and activities. First of all pay a visit to Rite Price Rentals Hamilton branch and hire yourself a car or van, then get to exploring! Pirongia Forest Park is just 30 km southwest of the city and covers a huge 167.7 square kilometres. It features tracks and trails to cater to any level of experience and features some gorgeous native forest. 70 kilometres east of Hamilton is where you will find New Zealand highest waterfall, Wairere Falls.
