Outside of the peak season, with fewer tourists, undisturbed scenery and the mountains still covered in snow; August can actually be a great time to explore New Zealand. You will need to wrap up warm for this winter month, but with the right clothing and preparation, August in New Zealand can be enjoyed just as much than any other time of the year.

As it is the last month of winter in New Zealand, August can be quite cold so make sure to pack some warm layers, as well as wet weather gear to protect you from the elements. Thankfully, it  does tend to be milder than the other winter months as the country moves into spring. Regions further north, such as Auckland and Northland, usually experience a lot of rain during the month of August whilst mountainous regions will have the most unpredictable weather, so be prepared for that.

Because it is still a winter month, but is considered a low season, it is perhaps the best time to hit the slopes. The ski fields are usually fully open, every run has had plenty of coverage, and there’s still room for more snow days. On top of that, it is outside school holidays so will be less crowded and a much more enjoyable experience. It would be the perfect time for beginners and newbies to learn! You may even be able to catch the various events and competitions happening up the mountains.

If you would rather take it easy and relax during your trip, you could take advantage of the vast amount of hot pools the country has to offer. You could treat yourself to some thermal mineral pools or go looking for some of the many free natural hot pools, especially around Rotorua. Going from the chilly August air to a naturally heated pool will leave you feeling fully relaxed and satisfied.

Another huge advantage of travelling in August is that prices tend to be lower, as it is considered a shoulder season. Many businesses will also be offering great deals to counter the lower amount of customers, so be sure to ask or check out their websites. You can also be much more impulsive with your plans as you tend to not have to book in advance for many things due to the lower amount of people travelling and booking. This allows a greater sense of freedom when thinking about what to do or where to go next.
