New Zealand’s reputation as a mecca for adventure tourism is well known. Here are some of the things you can do to get the blood pumping.

Skydiving

To some, throwing yourself out of an airplane sounds like a terrible idea. For others it’s the opposite. Skydiving is one of the most unique experiences one can have and the rush gained from it is said to feel like no other. You can skydive in various locations around New Zealand, including Wanaka, Queenstown, Lake Taupo, Auckland and Bay of Plenty.

Bungy Jumping

Invented by New Zealander AJ Hackett after witnessing the Vanuatu ritual of land diving, bungy jumping is one of the most popular extreme sports in the world.
Queenstown, with the first ever commercial bungy site, Kawarau, as well as the 134m Nevis jump, is the spiritual home of bungy jumping. It’s not the only place you can jump in New Zealand though, with sites in Auckland, Taupo and Waikato.

Jet Boating

This is one of the most popular activities in Queenstown, combining the New Zealand invention of Jetboats with a spectacular and exhilarating journey through Queenstown’s rivers and canyons. While Queenstown’s jet boating may be world famous, Taupo offers its own adrenaline-filled adventure. Fly past cliffs and landscapes at 80km per hour before enjoying the spectacular Huka Falls.

Rafting

Whether smashing through rapids or down waterfalls, including the highest commercially rafted in the world at 7m, or simply floating down a beautiful river with minor rapids, rafting is an experience that can be enjoyed by all. Rotorua has the Rangitaiki River for a more sedate experience, or the braver ones can try the Wairoa for some heart-pumping excitement. Queenstown, of course, has its own rafting experiences, as well as Lake Taupo and various other places throughout the country.

Caving

This is not an activity for everyone. Those with the propensity to feel claustrophobic should probably avoid the popular activity of spelunking (yes that is a real word). But for those who love venturing into the unknown and want to experience a whole new world, it is perfect. The most popular caving destination in New Zealand is the spectacular Waitomo caves. World famous for its glow worms, Waitomo can be enjoyed with a walking or boat tour or, for the more adventurous, by black water rafting through it. Whichever way you decide to traverse this vast cave system, you will not forget the unique experience.

Zip-Lining

Zip-lining is a unique and remarkable way to enjoy the stunning landscapes New Zealand has to offer. New Zealand is home to a number of spectacular zip lining experiences, where visitors can glide through beautiful native forest, across rivers and canyons. The Rotorua Canopy Tour is perhaps the most fascinating zip-line experience in the country. With a network of zip lines, swing bridges, walking trails and tree top platforms, you’ll see New Zealand’s incredible native bush like you never have before. Other popular zip-lines include the Waiheke island line, as well as Queenstown’s tour from Bob’s peak.
