Located within the world famous Fiordland National Park, Milford Sound has been described as ‘The Eighth Wonder of the World’ by renowned writer Rudyard Kipling and voted ‘The most beautiful place in the world’.

Breathtaking year round, the fiord's cliffs climb dramatically, mountain peaks reach toward the sky and waterfalls, some as high as 1000 metres, rain down majestically.

A great way to experience the sound is with one of the many boat cruises available. These include both day and overnight cruises. If hiking is more your thing then the Milford Track is for you. The track begins at the northern end of Lake Te Anau and weaves its way through some of the world’s most staggering wilderness. The track does not loop back, so at the end you will be taken from Sandfly Point to the Milford Sound wharf via boat.

The flora and fauna you will come across in Milford Sound are some of the most curious and unique animals and plantlife in the world. Native rainforest covers most of the cliffs, containing beautiful birdlife. Down below you will see fish and visiting mammals, including seals and dolphins, all of which are protected within the marine reserve.

What makes these encounters all the more memorable is the knowledge that you won’t be able to see some of these species anywhere else in the world. This is due to how isolated the sound is, as well as the damp weather and conditions.

The high rainfall and surrounding rainforest creates a quite remarkable natural effect - the top layer of water is fresh water, while the rest is salt water that has come in from the Tasman Sea. The surface of the water is a rich, dark colour, becoming stained by the bark on trees and other plant life as it runs through the rainforests into the sound.

Many people visit the Sound on a day trip from nearby towns of Te Anau(121 km) or Queenstown(278 km). The village of Milford Sound is small and does not boast a large amount of accomodation so it is advised to book in advance, or you can choose from the many options in Te Anau or Manapouri(140 km).

Due to the remoteness of the location, there is only one road leading to the world famous fiord. But the Milford Road is more than just a means to get to Milford Sound. It’s an unforgettable and jaw-droppingly beautiful journey into the heart of Fiordland National Park, and just as impressive as the destination itself.
