1. Te Papa Museum: One awesome thing about Te Papa is that entry to the museum is totally FREE! New Zealand’s national museum is the tells the story of the extraordinary history of New Zealand in the most interactive and exciting way possible! The Te Papa Museum is an in-depth informative experience of what Aotearoa/New Zealand is all about, from its geological origin to its native species, as well as its human history. It’s far from your dusty and dingy museums. Make sure you check out Awesome Forces, Golden Days, Bush City and Blood, Earth, Fire!
2. Weta Cave & Weta Workshop: The famous Weta Cave Shop is the hub of Weta Studio Tours in Miramar, Wellington. At the Weta Cave, you can snap a selfie with one of their life-sized sculptures, wander through the mini museum and watch their exclusive documentary… It’s a movie lover's paradise. Another great thing about going to the weta cave is, that entry is free ad they are open 7 days a week from 9 am- 5.30pm (excluding Christmas day)!! The Weta Cave has an incredible array of high-end sculptures, prop replicas, art prints and apparel designed by Weta artists. This is a MUST do!!
3. Have a coffee: We can’t send you to Wellington without letting you know their most incredible cafes and restaurants. Here are a few you MUST check out; Loretta on Cuba Street, Fidel's on Cuba Street, Olive on Cuba Street, Sweet Mothers Kitchen on Courtney Place, Maranui Surf Lifesaving Cafe which you’ll have to venture out to Lyall Bay to enjoy- but it’s worth the trip! Customs on Ghuznee Street, Prefab on Jessie Street… and if you’re looking for delicious cheap eats, make sure you head along to the Capital Market on Willis Street. These are just a few of the must tries, but you won’t be hard pressed to find something decent wherever you go in Wellington!
4. Nga Taonga Sound & Vision (Film Archive): The Film Archive collect and catalogue film reels, videotapes, sound records, props and documents and store them in special secure vaults. Their experts work hard to preserve the original nitrate film, television broadcast tapes and sound recordings before they break down. The film is digitally preserved material to give it the best chance to stands the test of time for future generations. People can attend their public programme screenings and festivals at the Wellington cinema and café. They also host a number of events and tours and hold education sessions for school and community groups.
5. City Gallery: The City Gallery Wellington is an incredible, dynamic cultural presence in the capital. Located in Civic Square, next to the Wellington City Library. They showcase contemporary art from New Zealand and around the world. It encourages research, display and debate about modern and contemporary visual art. City Gallery works collaboratively with artists, galleries, collectors, and more to bring events that are relevant to our lives today, test art’s boundaries, and challenge us. City Gallery’s activities are designed to nurture curiosity in the ideas explored within contemporary art. Entry is free, which is fantastic and is open from 10-5pm daily and open late night until 10 pm, first Thursday of the month (February- November). If you’re feeling peckish or need a coffee, Nikau Cafe located next door is a must do!
