We may be a small country but the things to see and do here, are endless. This week we’re dreaming about the gorgeous Coromandel!
The Coromandel Peninsular is on the East Coast of the North Island of New Zealand.
There are some mind blowing, beautiful, fun and adventurous activities to do in this area. Some of our favourite spots in the area are, Whitianga, Cathedral Cove, Hahei, Coromandel Town, Whangamata & Hot Water Beach.
This greater area is perfect to drive around and a fairly easy drive between towns (just be mindful of some of those windy roads & watch your speed, safety first!).
Base yourself in one town and make a week of doing day trips to the different towns in the area.
We thought we’d help you out, here are some beautiful things to see and do in some of our favourite spots.
Whitianga:
Whitianga is a sweet little town, where you can do a little, or a lot. This is the little town where you’ll always see a friendly face. Whitianga would be a great spot to base yourself if you want to try out some of the insane beaches in the area, like Cathedral Cove, Hahei Beach and Hot Water Beach. You definitely don’t want to miss going there!
But if you want to have a little down time and pamper yourself with a cocktail or beer in hand, then you should head to The Lost Springs Thermal & Day Spa. You could spend all day there. By the end of it, you’d wish you could live there. For more information on the Lost Springs, click through here.
We can’t forget to mention eateries, this is always a significant thought when travelling, a few highly rated spots are Eggsentric Cafe, The Harbour House Cafe, The Departure House & Blue Ginger, just to name a few. But there are so many more, you definitely won’t run out of options.
Cathedral Cove:
Cathedral cove is a beautiful hidden gem. Soft golden sand, bright blue water. Plenty of greenery and shelter to keep that beaming hot sun off you. Take a picnic lunch and head down with your crew of friends or family. The famous rock arch is a must do for snapping a few cool photos! This divine beach is only accessible by foot or by boat. If you walk it, it is most definitely worth it! The beautiful native bush around you and the breathtaking views. What’s not to love. It’ll take you approximately 35 minutes to walk down to the beach, from the carpark and 45 minutes back up to the top.
Hot Water Beach:
Hot Water Beach is a beach on Mercury Bay on the east coast of the Coromandel Peninsula. Hot Water Beach is famous for locals and visitors to flock to the beach within the 2 hours each side of low tide, to dig a big sand pit, in which you’ll discover the most wonderful, hot & natural spring water coming through. You’ll see kids, couples, teenagers and big family groups digging in to create their own natural spa on the beach. Hire a spade to help you dig and once it’s the perfect size, sit back relax and enjoy your own spa. Sounds dreamy and adventurous if you ask me!
Whangamata: Specifically, Whenuakura Island aka Donut Island, is starting to become a more well known spot in the Coromandel. It’s a short paddle board or kayak to Donut Island and you will be rewarded with scenes that will blow your mind. It is secluded serenity. What more could you want?!
The Island lies approximately 600m off the coast of Whangamata in the Coromandel Peninsula in New Zealand, and this incredible attraction features a secluded clear blue lagoon, surrounded by native greenery and volcanic cliff rock. Whenuakura Island is rich in Māori history and is privately owned by local Iwi, who are the guardians of the Island.
Coromandel Town:
No matter where you go around the Coromandel region, you’re bound to have a fun and relaxing time. Coromandel town is no different. It’s a little slice of paradise, close to many beaches, delicious eateries and fun activities. You will find time to do plenty of fishing, hiking, beach relaxing, eating yummy food, horse riding and maybe even a little spot of shopping and then of course a wine or beer to finish the day.
